Senior Spotlight

Due to the pause on athletic events until spring sports start up again, the blog decided to do a Senior Spotlight instead of Player of the Week for this week. On Monday, the Bulldog Blog picked Joanna Schlatter from the Defiance High School Girls Basketball team to be the Senior Spotlight!

Joanna has been dedicated to the basketball program and was named Honorable Mention All Western Buckeye League this Season! Throughout Joanna's time as a Bulldog hooper, she demonstrated great leadership on and off the court. Her height and strong agility have Joanna an edge on her opponents. From dropping dimes to her crowd aweing step back jumper, Joanna was an extremely skilled team player. With Joanna graduating this year, there are some big shoes to fill! Thank you, Joanna, for your effort in making Bulldog Basketball a success!

Best wishes as Joanna moves forward after high school!

Defiance Boys Varsity Basketball Team’s Season Comes to a Close

The Defiance High School Varsity basketball team wrapped up their season on Wednesday, March 3rd as the team fell short to a solid, Lima Shawnee team, in the first round of districts. After two consecutive wins the young Defiance team could not clinch their 3rd win in a row to continue their season. This team was forced to work through adversity and stay strong in difficult times. While this season had its ups and downs, and was like no other, due to Covid, there were many successes and accomplishments as well. The team ended up finishing third in the Western Buckeye league after going 6-3 in conference play and 15-9 overall. Also, a huge thank you to our trio of seniors on the team, CJ Zachrich, TJ Nafziger and Connor Black for all the hard work they have put in and their contributions to the team and program over the years.

Former Athlete Connor Buljalksi reflects and enlightens about the Track and Field program

Connor Bujalski
Photo Credit: Defiance College Athletic Department

With the Trank and Field squads opening up competition at the end of the month, I decided to interview a recent graduate from Defiance High School who ran for the team. This athlete is Connor Bujalski; he was on the team for four years and lettered all four years while he was on the team.

So while talking to Connor, I had asked him about what Track meet was the most important one for the team to compete at this year. With a quick response, he replied, "it would have to be the Napoleon Invitation." He continued by saying, "this invitation is huge for the team with Napoleon being so close to the school. It is basically a big rivalry between them and us." As we continued, I asked him who are two athletes we should keep an eye on during the season; he replied with "Payton Switzer of the boys' team and Katlyn Parrish " he continued by saying, "Payton is a senior this year, so he is a leader for them this year, and I expect him to lead by example on the track and in the classroom. While Katlyn, on the other hand, isn't a senior, she will still have a big role on the team being a leader by showing her work effort during the year.

Our conversation then turned to how he thought the team would perform over the next few years with his class graduating and the new class of seniors taking over the team leader roles. He responded with, " the team will remain decent for the next few years, but he has fears that after his class graduated that the numbers on the team became very low." He continued by saying this could become a cause for concern because if the team wants to continue to compete at a high level, they need numbers to fill out the roster."

So, join me in wishing the track teams good luck at their first competition, which will be at Defiance on Tuesday, March 30th

PLAYER OF THE WEEK!

Bradyn Shaw

During the OHSAA Boys Basketball Sectional Final game against the Van Wert High School Cougars, Shaw led his team to a second half push to take a 51-30 victory! He led all scorers with 18 points while splashing three baskets from beyond the arc. Shaw dribbled through the Cougar defense and used his silky smooth jumper to bring loads of excitement to the Defiance High School arena on Saturday night! Now, Shaw and his teammates with have a "dogfight" against Lima Shawnee this Wednesday at the District tournament in Spencerville, OH!

Be sure to congratulate Bradyn and show your love for Bulldog Basketball in the comment section below ↓
